LARRY'S goal with this shot was to balance the ambient light with flash. (Notice the background and the subject are both pleasingly exposed)In other words the palm trees are not lost in shadows due to the subjects flash exposure. This was accomplished by "dragging the shutter" [by increasing the ISO] and dialing down the flash intensity.
