(Notice the background and the subject are both pleasingly exposed)In other words the palm trees are not lost in shadows due to the subjects flash exposure. This was accomplished by "dragging the shutter" [by increasing the ISO] and dialing down the flash intensity. The result is a nicely exposed subject (not overexposed) while maintaining detail in the plant life.
